How To Take A Well-Deserved Break

By Joanie Cheung on August 22, 2016

As we all know, college has already started. Yes, it is inevitable for us to have a gigantic load of stress waiting on our doorsteps, but there are productive and healthy ways to alleviate our stress and take a break from time to time.

Allow yourself 30 to 60 minutes to do so, whether it be in or out of your dorm. The following suggestions will help you become aware of and help you decide how to let your eyes, body, and mind relax.

 1. If you want to venture out of your dorm during your break …

1. Exercise.

Sitting for hours because you have to study can be suffocating and cause your whole body to ache. So why don’t you allow yourself some time to breathe some fresh air outside and stretch? You can walk around the campus or local park. If you want to take it up a notch, why not even exercise at a nearby gym or recreation center?

2. Visit a local coffee shop or café.

A nice cup of coffee or drink (i.e. Starbucks or Jamba Juice) can definitely brighten up your day or replenish your energy. Sitting in a new comfortable atmosphere where you can sip your drink at your own pace and think about nothing else will definitely help you take a break.

3. Talk/hang out with friends.

Meeting and chatting with friends enables you to let your mind be off of the recent calculus homework or history project you have to do. Simply sharing laughs and stories with them can relieve the impact of and lessen your stress. However, make sure you don’t get carried away with the time!

2. If you want to rest in your dorm during your break …

1. Listen to music.

There is a wide range of music genres worth exploring and listening to on Youtube, Spotify, etc. Simply closing your eyes and listening to quality music is just so pleasantly soothing to the mind.

2. NAP.

Maybe your mind needs to be completely turned off. If so, take a 20 to 30 minute nap. Set an alarm to make sure that you are NOT going to be knocked out for hours! Otherwise, you would be sleeping and feeling groggy when you wake up to study again.

3. Make yourself a little something to eat.

The last option would be to cook yourself something that will refresh your body and give you strength. The healthy option would be to eat mixed fruit or vegetables. However, don’t cook something that will end up making you too full, where you end up in a food coma.

It is hard not to overwhelm yourself in the midst of college, so I hope these suggestions will encourage you to give yourself a break and help you manage your stress better!
